Scaled score 555 is the passing line — what mock exam score is safe?

ARDMS hasn't published exactly how the exam is scored. Based on patterns test-takers have noticed, it seems that easy questions almost everyone gets right don't add much weight, while harder questions many people miss seem to count for more when you get them right — and being notably weak in one specific content area appears to pull your overall score down, while scoring evenly across all areas tends to produce a higher result. But since none of this is officially confirmed, no specific mock score — URR or otherwise — reliably converts into a "safe" number above 555.

I failed by a small margin (540-550 range) — what should I review?

ARDMS scores run from 300 to 700, with 555 as the passing line — so relative to that range, 555 isn't an extremely high bar to begin with. But when you land just under it, it feels like a few more correct answers would have done it. That feeling is misleading: ARDMS uses a distinctive scoring method, not simple per-question points, that appears to weigh whether you scored evenly across all areas, whether you missed questions most people get right, and whether you got the harder questions most people miss. Being 15 points under 555 doesn't mean you were "a few questions away."

How many image-based questions (ultrasound photo interpretation) actually appear on the exam?

Based on general test-taking experience, close to 30% of exam questions include an image — out of 100 questions, that's somewhere around 30 to 40 with an image attached. It can feel like even more than that once you're actually in the exam. I've personally counted images while taking the real exam, and it varies a bit test to test, but overall lands around 30-35%.

People say certain questions or topics appeared on their exam — should I rely on those exam reports?

Asking "what came up on the exam?" is essentially asking for past exam questions, and ARDMS doesn't really work that way. The only source is other candidates' memories after they sit the exam, and there's no guarantee that what appeared for them will appear for you. ARDMS has been developing questions for over 50 years and draws from a very large question bank, so each sitting is put together differently and at random.

Am I just bad at the ARDMS exam itself? (Could the exam not suit the way I study?)

Possibly. Some people's study style just doesn't fit how ARDMS exams work, and that's a question of fit, not of knowledge.
